My Sweet dear girl, I want to share with you your birth story and the little miracles God allowed us to experience including you :o)
The labor part started on Saturday night when I lost the mucus plug, so Sunday morning we headed straight to the hospital with yiayia, papou and Vasilia Luz. There they checked me and saw that I was maybe 1 centimeter dilated, they heard your heartbeat and since everything looked good they sent me home...I had not felt any contractions yet.
After that we went to church...for the end of the service and to see your daddy who was working. After that we headed out to Fontana at your grandparent's home where your second baby shower took place. There were some relative that were betting we were not going to make it to the shower but there we were! It was a very fun shower that your auntie Jodi planned and daddy had other guys there...it was a combined baby shower...I really liked it! I also like the part that all four of your grandparents were there. People tried to guess your name through a game and actually your aunt Kristin is the only one who guessed your whole name right 'Gabriela Zoe'!!! How awesome..we awarded however the name GiZeLe because it was spelling out your initials and that was uncle Bill and MaryAnne wrote down.
Monday morning we decided to go shopping so our first stop was Ross, your greek family's favorite american store ;o) My contractions started there at 11 a.m.! It must have been really funny for people to see me pacing back and forth breathing. but I was in labor and happy. After that papou and giagia were thinking that we should go home...but I said if she is coming today I have to go to Babies r Us and get a few things I know I'll need....I don't remember at all what those things were! then it was lunch time and went to eat at an italian restaurant in Simi Valley. I had eggplant parmigiana...I had heard that eggplant can cause labor so since I was already in labor I thought I might help the situation.
After lunch we headed home, I continued to labor and laid in bed and moved around and took a bath. Which actually slowed down the contractions. However it had been more that an hour that my contractions were 5-7 minutes lasting for about a minute so your daddy was convinced it was time for the hospital. I tried to drag it out as much as possible but in the end everything was packed in the car and we were ready to go. Your papou, giagia and thia followed us to the hospital. Once at the hospital in the triage they checked to see that you were ok and that was clear and they checked me and if I remember well I was 3 cm. They told me to go home...but noone felt comfortable driving home knowing there was a chance we were going to be back within a few hours so we decided to look for a motel. Then I realized I just couldn't do it and thought that the hospital would be better than the motel. At that time I had started to lose my rhythm and my panic caused the pain to be amplified. So back to the hospital we went and I got admitted.
Standing was so much easier to deal with the pain but they had me laying down for a lot of the time so at those times it was hard. Once I was able to stand I would celebrate! After 16 hours had passed with no real progress they wanted to give me pitocin that would increase the contractions and their intensity. Because I had not slept all night and I wanted to be awake when I met you I decided to get an epidural since we did not know how much longer our journey was going to be. The doctor came and broke my water first and when that did not do anything they gave me the pitocin. It was 10 more hours after increasing the pitocin several times that I was finally dilated to 10 cm and was able to push. Your daddy was right there along side me telling me to push...telling you to push...and push you did :o) You kicked me so hard one time that I vomited :o) At the time I was blaming the nurse to Stephen that she was pushing me too hard! I was nice though I only said to your daddy that I did not want that nurse to touch me again! I do not know how the time went by, usually in hospital at this period of time they do not let women push more than 2 hours but our doctor would let me push for three hours...however because after 2 1/2 hours there was no progress they told us that it was best to go in for a c-section. So they prepared me and your daddy for the surgery. I must have fallen asleep because I do not remember getting to the surgery room but once I was there I waited and waited until I finally heard your cry! And the doctor said that you were a girl!!! That was so exciting for me!!! I wanted to have a girl so bad :o) After they cleaned you up daddy brought you close so i could see you and then he took you outside to announce your name to the family "Gabriela Zoe" which means God is my Strength and Life...so true!
God was your strength and your life as well as mine and under any other circumstances you and I may not have survived this ordeal. I had a 105 fever and the cord was wrapped around your neck 3 times. But here we are both of us healthy and strong with a chance to live the lives that God has so graciously given us. You are a little miracle and we cannot wait to see you discover all the gifts God has given you and how you are going to be used for His glory. You are also a precious gift...God was thinking of daddy and mommy when he made you. We love you very much and a verse that stuck with us during this season is that "Those who sow in tears will reap in joy" You have brought so much joy in our lives we did not even know it was possible! This is you and your story of how you came from mommy's tummy into this world.

More Music
from the time she was little I would sit on the piano and let her press the keys and have fun. It had been though a short time that I neglected to do it. The other day Gabriela Zoe walked up to the piano by herself and started playing away. It is a great time spent while mommy is putting dishes away or cooking. In fact I have a hard time taking nice pictures of her because they come out blurry...she is a girl on the move...however when she is at the piano she turns and gives me great smiles!!!
Tsa a.k.a. Peekaboo!
'tsa' is the greek version of peekaboo. We've been playing from the time she was very young and it always has produced plenty of chuckles and hillarious laughs. When she was younger occasionally she would put a blankie or whatever clothing she found close by and put it over her eyes and then pull it down fast and smile :o) Lately she has been saying 'tsa', even thought it is not always timed right..ex. she says 'tsa' when she puts her hands over her eyes and then takes them out fast with a huge smile. SSSooooo cute!! She even likes to play the game with her reflection from the piano and our mirror in our bedroom. She supports on the humidifier and leans away from the mirror and then leans towards it 'tsa'! Ahhhh she makes me laugh!

Ugly Truths
This blog may take a while to write even though I am going on two points. Both of the things I am going to talk about were provoked by two different blogs that I read in the past couple of days.
The first one is related to hardship...I have not gone through a tremendous amount of hardship in my life and for that I praise God. The closest I ever came to hardship was the dealing with of difficult feelings I've had following the delivery of my precious daughter. I wrote in a previous entry of my hopes and dreams of that day. Quite frankly only the most important thing came out the way I had dreamed and hoped for a healthy baby girl. Now it even feels silly to write that I had difficult feelings after experiencing such a miracle and the sovereignty of our Lord. But yes, I had them and I still cry when I talk, or write about it. In a recent conversation with someone who had gone through a similar experience she struggled with similar feelings for almost two years, and I believe the end of it coincided with the birth of a second child. The writer of the blog I read was going through a difficult circumstance and ended up saying that probably God is just smiling because he can see the end. While I understand the hope in that statement it hit me hard. There is not one ounce of me that thinks there is anything funny about the dealing of the feelings I've had. It has been hard work of letting go in order to allow for God's joy to come. While I believe that God has a sense of humor, I just know that even though he knows the end is good, He cried/cries with me when I cry, and knows my pain intimately. He does not look at me in my pain and smile, He is the embodiment of the verse that encourages us believers to weep with those who weep and laugh with those who laugh. His responses are not out of order or programmed but rather sensitive to the needs of His children. I thank him for that and I have a hope that one day I will look back and only remember good things.
That brings me to another blog entry that was so beautiful in describing the birth of her child. It was painfully familiar to what I had imagined the labor and delievery to be. I wished I could write about my birth story...but I can't. If I wrote it now I am not sure I would want my daughter to read it. But I will start writting with the same hope...one day I will be able to say the story remembering only the good things...and there were many!!!!
If you are hurting there is hope, take it from me every day can be a better day when we cling on Jesus!

Healing 15
Healing 15....you must be wondering the same thing I was when my mom first talked to me about that. What? Well she read some articles about children's psychology I believe and what it basically says is that when a child or baby get scared, gets hurt,,,whatever...to hold them for 15 minutes, or as close to that as possible. That amount of time, apparently seems to allow for the baby to calm down and feel safe again. Since she told me I started doing it...not for every little bump...but say she has been trying to get my attention and then she falls...they cry is pretty desperate so I just set everything aside and hold her...usually reading a book in my lap or singing works for my baby :o) I have seen a difference in the way that she calms down so it is good advice...worth trying! :o)
To fear or not to fear
Last night Gabriela Zoe woke up around 10:20 or so crying...I am used to her waking up, crying a little and going back to sleep so I did not move immediately. Actually, i went up to my husband to discuss our 'battle plan' and get the ok to give her another dose of the inhaler. Hearing the the crying was not getting any softer I headed to her room to see...the light on! At that moment I flashed back a few hours earlier when we had Gabriela Zoe downstairs in her carseat taking a nap and I went in her room to talk to Stephen on the phone so I don't disturb her. After Stephen and I hang up I closed my eyes momentarily and the it happened...the light turned on! (Stephen caringly installed a remote control for one of the lights in her bedroom, in our past experience this remote picks up other signals also which causes the light to turn off or on randomly) It startled me, and I sat there staring at it and then had the thought that we needed to remove the remote so it does not do that to Gabriela Zoe. A few minutes later I woke up Gabriela Zoe, dinner, bath, medicin (an added thing in our routine) and I forgot about the light...until then! i run to her bedroom because I knew she had been startled awake and that caused fear! I held her, prayed, spoke and sung to her. Following my mom's advice I held her for 15 minutes, and she had started to dose off again and placed her in bed. All was good :o)
That started me thinking on fear though...a young baby that does not really know about the evil in the world is afraid!! How easily we are to fear anything...I did not know this but I had the fear of men (not the gender more the biblical meaning of mankind). I was afraid what people would think of me, I grew up that way. Even though my mom and dad did their best to protect my sister and I from ill given comments about us still I felt the pressure that what I did was being watched and judged. That kind of pressure can turn into two different directions...fear or defiance. There were times that I acted in defiance...I'll do what I believe is rights and if the don't like it well...too bad. However, most of the time I just hid into my own coccun and did not let people come in. I have since learned that while it is important to have peace with the decisions I make upon seeking the Lord I have to keep in mind what Paul said: to the Jews I am a Jew...to the Gentiles a Gentile. Woe to the one who makes his brother stumble. At the same time there is not reason to hide and keep everyone at a distance. If they are true friends they will understand or seek conversation on the matter, if they want to judge they will judge anything even things I did not do.
The severity of that fear hit me a little bit over two years ago, when I decided to change voice teachers. My husband knows the many many times of crying I did because I did not feel like my voice teacher was tackling things I knew needed to change. His advice: why don't you change teachers? So simple in his head...why did I not change teachers? I found out when I made the choice to try a different one for a little while. I was terrified when I went to tell that teacher...after i walked out of the office I was shaking! A few days afterward I started feeling a sense of freedom...I may not have experienced from the time I was a little child! The lesson from that experience has tricked down to other relationships...it is hard when you know that some relationships may not be the same, that previous voice teacher would no longer acknowlede a smile and hello, but the ones that stand the test are trully worth it! But most importatly a life without the fear of men, that I strive for, is a great life :o)

Nasal Aspirator
In a previous post I was asking for ANY advice on how to aspirate my daughter's nose better. Good news! Our cousin wrote on her blog that she found the perfect nasal aspirator...so I thought lets try it. So 3a.m. Monday morning after Gabriela Zoe's midnight waking I got online and ordered it. While the music, now only serves as a warning of doom for my daughter and she starts screaming...and while it is still mostly a two person job, Stephen holds I aspirate...I still have to use one hand to hold her head still (you can imagine how difficult it is when I am by myself), it is the most snot we've gotten out of that little nose in the last 10 months combined. It works great...so if you have a difficult one like mine or are expecting a baby this is the way to go! The link is below for you convinience

Solids
There are so many things I learned...learning while raising Gabriela Zoe. I cannot help but attribute some of the success I have had to family and friends, some on reading Babywise I and II but most of it to God. Gabriela Zoe is a 10 months old baby healthy, growing and full of life!!!....she also eats everything mommy gives her :o) That...did not just happen!!! She did all the yukky faces babies do but we worked through them. First of all it helped me to realize that a yukky face may mean to me 'i don't like it' but really to her it means 'oh...i don't know it'.
We started cereal at five months because I had felt it in my heart to start at that age before she was born...and after she was born I was proven right because she started to have problems with weight gain. I cannot say that we had problems with cereal because she absolutely enjoyed it. She did make a little yukky face when it became thicker but after a few prodings she learned to like it also. For the timeline I followed the babywise method, which, I believe that even my pediatrician would be happy with :o) We had cereal for four weeks...first week for dinner, second week for lunch and dinner, third week breakfast, lunch and dinner. Fourth week I tried a different grain...oatmeal. (She was ready for a change and gulped the oatmeal down so fast I could not believe it) Here is a funny story: one day I decided to try her rice cereal to see how it tasted. "mmm so sweet" I thought "off with the cream of wheat in with rice cereal...it is so much sweeter" About two minutes after the thought I realized that the sweetness came from the breastmilk...since we started mixing the cereal with formula instead I have found that to be ever more true! So here it goes: what helped her transition to cereal was the at first I mixed with with expressed breastmilk...a familiar sweet taste!
At the end of the four weeks she was ready for veggies, and to the pediatrician's joy, she was six months! But at the pediatrician's dismay I followed a La Leche League advice and the first veggie was mashed avocado. There are many patterns out there for introducing new foods for allergic and tolerance reasons...my husband and I agreed on every four days. I served the veggie for lunch and dinner BEFORE cereal (I knew she liked cereal, when i gave it to her before the veggies, like babywise suggested I found that she was full and would not take the veggies, if I gave the veggies first she was more hungry and I knew no matter what she would eat the cereal) I got all the yukky faces...for THREE days, and at lunch time it was always worst than dinner. I learned that tiny bitty bites are so much easier to go down when starting with something new (I am thanful for my small tiny gerber spoons) I would try to give her as much as I could within about half an hour (or as much patience as I had at the time) and I kept in mind that even if she only got a few bites it was simply an introduction and I did not expect her to eat the whole tablespoon I offered (if she finished it we celebrated) Then we had green beans and peas, sweet potatoes, carrots, bananas, apples and pears.
After all those I felt like I had covered the bases and then the menu went as such...lunch-veggie, cereal, fruit, dinner-veggie, cereal (even though babywise suggested the fruit for dinner I found that since we eat dinner a little later the sugar in the fruit wound her up at night). I still follow that pattern and planning for the next month and a half when my daughter is ! year old. I'll see what I'll do after that. I occasionally intruduced new veggies, especially when we went to Greece like zucchini, squash, mashed potatoes, asparagus, brussel sprouts. I made a promise to myself that I would not give my daughter anything that I thought was detestable. I found that even the organic versions even though their single ingredient foods (which I still use on occasion) taste good when they start combinin...yuk!! I do a better job combining veggies that taste good together. At about 9 months I decided why not...eat from our food that is seasoned...and she eats both our salted food and her unsalted veggies just the same. Do I still get the weird moods where she does not want to try something or pretend she does not want it? YES but I perservere and she discovers she likes it.
Ex. a couple of days ago I decided to make chicken soup because we were all coming down...at first she kept pushing the spoon, turning her head, making a yuk face...and she didn't even have a bite! After several no's for her bad behavior I gave her a few spoonfools of cereal and then sneak in a spoonfull of soup...she spit it out (a new trick she learned, which we are working at breaking) and then she started picking them up from her bib to put them back in the mouth because she realized she liked it! After that she drank so much soup it made her mommy happy o)
I hope all this helps at least one of you in one way or another! God be with you!

Pritty Bitty Bowtique
Our cousin has started a little while ago a rather successful business making bows for little girls heads :o) I bought several bows...one matching perfectly with one my favorite dresses of Gabriela Zoe's. I received some as gifts...and they are by far the best head toppings I own :o) They are soooo reasonably priced you will want to buy them all!!! She is getting ready to launch a website with little models wearing her stuff, I've seen a preview and it is so amazingly cute. For now check out her blog where she has a ton of bows. I know that if you do not find the perfect bow you can show her a picture of the outfit and she will create something to go with it!!! Enjoy

A Weird Week
The week started last Monday when Gabriela Zoe woke up crying and we realized she was stuffy and had a low grade fever! After that we had two good nights until I thought that vicks would help her breathing. Undoubtedly I believe it did...however after a few hours vicks makes you all sweaty and gross and that would wake her up. My mom reminded me that by giving me the advice of putting something between her clothes and skin to avoid the cold sticky feeling. Well I think the towels bothered her so she kept waking up at night. So two nights ago I decided to nix the vicks and since we have had good sleeps!! Praise God! From the sleepless nights I think i got tired enough that my immune system went bye bye so i caught the cold too...still fighting it :o) Then on Friday night after I handed Gabriela Zoe to Stephen to put to bed because I felt like I was going to collapse...i went to bed and slept...I think for an hour. When i woke up I felt bad for Stephen hanging out by himself on a Friday night so I decided to join him and try to eat something. As I went down the stairs, I am not sure if it was step or step step but the next was was DROP. About 3 or 4 stairs worth. God protected me it and it was only a slight twist.
Now Gabrila Zoe is doing much much better and my foot is feeling better...still hurts when i put all my weight but I can definately go up and down the stairs easier.
God did not allow this week to finish in defeat...we saw healing happening to our bodies...Praise be to His name :o)
Please pray that Stephen stays healthy and strong and that our healing will be complete!

Like or Love?
I grew up in Greece and my first language is Greek! When I first came to America I kept hearing "I love" this and "I love" that. I could not figure out why people would use the word love for things. In Greek love is reserved for people and it is serious! My now husband Stephen when we first met working in the school cafeteria he asked me how to say "I love you"...once I taught him he kept saying it to me. I had started to like him at some point but still had the clarity of mind to know that he did not mean it, he was just having fun speaking Greek. So I said "I don't know how you do things here in America but in Greece when one says 'I love you" they mean it. So please do not say it to me again unless you mean it" Three years later he said it again...and he meant it :o)
Well that's not the point people here also use the word for things. I love pizza? I love eating? I love snowboarding? I love singing? I love cooking? So weird!!!!!
I have been thinking that I have adopted that kind of speech and I now think that I do not want to diminish the word 'love' anymore. I'll try to stay true to myself and use like...or extremely like to describe something I enjoy. But I do love YOU! God bless you,

Intresting Things our Daughter is Doing
Another things she is liking to do is put things into things...let me explain...her toys in the trash can is a good example, or her toothbrush in a cup, a good thing if you ask me. Also the other day after I got home from grocery shopping she was just wandering so i decided to give the three of my smallest mixing bowls, since I rarely use them, and because they are colorful I thought it would grab her attention. They did!!! She was banging them on the floor and everything but the fun thing for me...when i saw her putting a Balance bar, I also left it for her to play and its another story, inside the bowl...so so cute.
Speaking of the Balance bar after I had seen her carefully placing it inside the bowl I returned to putting dishes away, until I heard a constant chewing rhythm...I go to see what she is eating...she had taken the balance bar out of the wrapper and was enjoying the nice sugar toping...I guess now I know she is not allergic to nuts.
Today as she was taking her bath...I think for the first time she really noticed the shiny silvery water stop. I believe that she thought it was edible or at least mouth appealing because she dipped her face inside the water to bite it. She did not do it once but twice!!!! I was just cracking up and she could not figure out why mommy was laughing with her unsuccesful and mouthwatering attempts of bitting that silvery shinny goodness :o)
I so much enjoy being her mom!!!

New Year 2009
Since the year 1999-2000 I have spent every New Year in Santa Cruz where our friends/american parents live. The last 5 years I think we have incorporated of baking the New Year's Cake, Greek tradition, with the coin. This year Jesus got it!!! This year actually Stephen due to his job could not leave before the actually 1st of the month. So we drived up on New Years Day. We left at Gabriela Zoe's nap and she got to take her two naps in the car. We arrived in Santa Cruz in enough time for dinner! I was a little sad because I did not get around to making the New Year's cake...but as soon as we arrived Kathi had made it!!! It was great to spend a few days with Kathi and Charles. Also their three grandkids would come to hang out with Stephen and play wii. We all had a good ol time :o) We did spend most of our time inside...since Stephen got addicted to wii, I got my hair dyed with red and blonde streaks and Gabriela Zoe had fun exploring a new house. On Sunday we went to church and the we headed to the beach where Gabriela Zoe as soon as we arrived she fell into deep sleep :o) it was great walking around and breathing the clean fresh air.
That Sunday after we put Gabriela Zoe to sleep we drove down to L.A. to go to Disneyland. We spent the night in a hotel...well we arrived at 2:30am that's why we chose to go straight down to Anaheim. The next day Monday we got to go to Disneyland and use our year passes :o) Gabriela Zoe did not get to do any new rides besides the carousel in California Adventure with aquatic animals instead of horses. She really likes it...I tried to get a video but for some reason it did not record fully. We also got to go to the Mickey Mouse club house while Stephen went to the tower...brrr and she danced and clapped her hands.. she enjoyed looking mickey, minnie, daisy, donald, goufy and the human on stage :o)
Next time i want to go the Alladin Show...I heard that it is really good!
Gabriela Zoe's first Christmas
On Christmas day when Gabriela Zoe woke up we used our nativity set to recount the christmas story and then we got to open our gifts. Gabriela Zoe had tons and tons of gifts to open since the package from Greece had arrived on time (not a virtue we can claim as our own however). Our gift to her was her red minnie mouse outfit she wore later that day and her little walker/stroller. We are glad that our gift was a real hit :o) One of the other fun gifts she got that all of her little cousins loved as well was this little duck singing the chicken dance as it is called in America. When we got done opening our gifts we headed out to Stephen's cousin's house Bobby and Shannon and there we hang out with the family and had the amazing Christmas breakfast!!!
For the late afternoon and evening we headed to the Larkin's house for a quiet time with family, opening gifts and eating some more :o)
The day after Christmas after hitting Target for after Christmas sales (if you wait a few days later you may find less but the price is also less...I found that out later), we went to celebrate Papa Stu's birthday. Usually we hang out at aunt Sherryl's and uncle Larry's home but this time we got to spend it at the grandparent's home. Grandma Franceen was especially exited to get to use her awesome Christmas china. Unfortunately I do not have any pics from that day...but I am sure that soon enough I'll find some :o) Gabriela Zoe had fun hanging out and getting to know her cousins, I think once she starts walking there will be no stopping that little girl gang...poor little Owen (the first great grand boy born in the Smith side of the family!)
Well that sums us our Christmas adventures...we spend it witlh family, shared stories and laughed...good time and it was awesome to have everyone come together!

Disneyland Day

This year again as part of our Christmas gift from Stephen's work we got to spend one day in Disneyland. This time was extra special because it was Gabriela Zoé's first time. We decided before we arrived that we probably would not accomplish/ride all that much so we had a very slow pace. Imagine...we arrived at noon!!!! So first thing was to feed Gabriela Zoé in the special area that Dinseyland provides with nursing room, high chairs, changing tables...everything one would ever need. There we saw our friends who were there also taking care of their babies so when we were done we went together to the Storybook ride. After that we went to see our friend James do a turkey call to the turkeys at the park...never knew before that day they have areas with real animals. Melissa, Hannah and Rebecca had to leave after that so with James, Lindsey and Daniel we headed to take pictures with Santa Clause!!! We waited in line and James was hoping Daniel would cry with Santa but as soon as we got there...he was happy like a jelly bean but Gabriela Zoé cried her little heart out. I don't have any of the crying pictures because somehow they got erased from our camera (she may be heppy in the future about that) along with a great picture of the 3 of us with minnie mouse. (she loved minnie mouse and her big black nose (0:)
The ride that Gabriela Zoé enjoyed the most was the carousel ride....she was waving hello to the people outside and our friend Andrea who was standing outside was convinced that she waved hello to her too :o) Speaking of Andrea it was because of her willingless to watch Gabriela Zoé Stephen and I got to ride Space Mountain together (last year I waited in line with him and he went by himself since I was pregnant) It was the first ride I went to since 2 years ago so I was supppper excited!!!! Later on another friend watched her while we went to the new ride in California Adventure....Toy Story!!! So cool. You may ask how on earth we were able to go across the way? Well Stephen and Gabriela Zoé with a little bit of my parents help converted our one day passes to year passes for my Christmas gift. So now we can have endless fun!!
So yeah I think all that sums up our day! All the other time we were feeding or changing Gabriela Zoé. We ended our day at the Rainforest Cafe which is kind of a tradition with the Patsaouras side of the family. Gabriela Zoé was sleeping so hopefully next time she gets to also enoy the monkeys, fish and stuff :o)
